Actually made of a compound similar to pyrex, these structures are predominate on the open surface of the shires and are used to produce steam.  Clear globes with a diameter of 12" with a mirrored bottom.  Within the globe is a cluster of clear capillaries that are there thinest at the focal point of the parabolic mirror at the bottom of the globe.  Water is pumped through channels  on the trunk, branched and is divided into the capillaries where it is turned to steam.  The steam is aggregated and drawn back through the branches and trunk to below the surface where it is used ro run motors and generators.
